Where things are standing

Slowly more and more features are being added on Slevi.net. By now we're roughly 2 weeks ahead of when I started but it definitely shows. Whereas on day 1 it was all a pretty blank now we're actually watching something which you might even call a very primitive blog. However, there is still a lot to be done. So far it's just the very outer shell which is being set up.

What's already there though? Let's have a quick look:

  • Submitting entries
  • Fetching entries
  • Registration
  • Logging in
  • Popbox - my very primitive image viewer

All of these features however are still within the building blocks, there are some issues when it comes to usability, design and security which will have to be resolved. Nonetheless it's already been a great learning experience!

Within a couple of weeks I expect the lot of this to be ready for usage on the public page. Till then, it's remaining hidden for outsiders (although not too hard to find ;-), hehe). But first, there's some more pesky little bugs to squash!

A fresh start, one step at a time

Over 3 years ago by now I started with slevi.net as a blog, even before that I've always kept myself busy scripting with PHP and MySQL. Although it's something which is a mere hobby of mine I definitely do enjoy it. From now on I wish to combine these two, use slevi.net as a playground for my skills and train them up a bit further. Just like in the old days there will still be a bloggish feeling to it all, however the posting frequency might definitely not be as high.

What to do?

As it stands now it's all pretty bare, heck this single post isn't even more than simple xhtml for now. Building it all up from scratch definitely will not be an easy thing to do, as it gives an entire laundry list of items to work through; one thing however is certain, it will be fun. Another great upside is that for a change I can truly customize it all to my personal demands, after all no matter how great some of the existing packages are they were always lacking something which I ended up having to add myself.

Just to give a little overview on what is currently standing on this 'laundry list', have a look at the following items. They're just a very small portion of all that needs to be done, but let's keep it simple for now ;-).

  • Entry pushing/fetching into/from db
  • Caching entries to reduce server load
  • Download section
  • Code parsers allowing for easy use in tutorials
  • BB-Code support
  • Commenting support, since input rocks
  • RSS support

Sharing is caring

Since I believe in the educational value the internet and source code can have, the entire backend of the new slevi.net shall gradually be posted online. At first mere highlights of interesting sections, however once it's in a condition stable enough which I consider worthy of going public it will. But that's definitely not all!

On top of that I shall also use the downloads section for sharing e.g. my XNA work. After all I'm sure it might serve a much better purpose on here where others can have access to the source code and might be able to learn from it rather than ending up in my virtual trash can as usual. For this to work out well however I am wanting to create a code parser which allows to dynamically reads in the source files and possibly gives the opportunity to readers to add comments on the code in an easy readable fashion; in order to find out what exactly that entails, be sure to check on back.

Multimedia

Another item of interest might be the different forms of multimedia I'd like to integrate. Picture as well as video material shall be added, at first mainly to be used for showing off some of my gaming adventures but it might go beyond that one day. For this definitely some work will have to be done on making it work well, but that's part of the entire challenge after all :-). In the end though, it's going to be worth it.

Finishing words

As you might see I'm having quite some plans for the future of slevi.net, it'll definitely be quite a change from how things were. Due to my busy schedule however I will not be able to give any definite timelines on when things shall be rounded up or even closed to finishing as of yet. As things come closer to finalizing however I will definitely keep you as my readers up to date with what's going on.

With that I'll be closing up this initial entry on the newly reformed slevi. Although I'm not exactly sure on when the next update shall be I hope to be seeing you back when it's there.
